Giclee Prints - What are they?
Giclee (pronounced Gee'clay) is a French term meaning to spray or squirt, which is how an inkjet printer works. However, a Giclee Printer is not the same as a standard desktop inkjet printer, and is much larger, they are sometimes better known as Wide Format Printers. The Printer we use for our Giclee Prints is the Epson Stylus Pro 7600 and has been affectionately named 'Dolly'.
The giclee printing process provides better color accuracy than other means of reproduction.
Giclee prints are continuous in tone and can reveal all the tonal nuance and color embodied in the original image. In fact, it is very difficult to distinguish between the original painting and a Giclee Print......
Do Giclee printers use ordinary printer inks and how long do they last before fading occurs?
No. We use special light-fast inks from the Epson Ultra-Chrome range.
Giclees which are printed with these inks, protected from UV light and
framed under glass with a UV filter, have a life span up to 155 years without noticeable fading!
This is particularly true of the lifespan of Giclees printed on the Epson Ehanced Matte Paper we use.
Giclee Prints on canvas are sprayed for maximum protection from UV light, this also gives them some water resistance (although not completely waterproof) and extends their lifespan considerably...if they are stretched onto a timber frame, they can have a lifespan of around 65 years (before any noticeable fading occurs)
Stretched canvas giclees tend to have a shorter lifespan than paper under glass because they are more exposed to the environment....alternatively, if you have your canvas framed under glass with a UV filter, this may extend their life to around 80 years.
We give you our assurance that the inks, paper and canvas we use are all of the highest quality.
How much do Giclee Prints actually cost?
Giclee prints are very affordable, ranging in price from as little as $7 to $45 each.
